Cleaning: Removing Pet Stains and Odors

We love our pets, but sometimes they can wreak havoc in our homes, especially if they aren’t fully house trained. No one wants their home to smell like a kennel or a litter box, and everybody is embarrassed by unsightly stains.

The most important step in removing pet stains and pet odors is cleaning the area immediately after a mishap. Don’t let stains and odors soak into flooring and fabrics. Remove solid waste and apply paper towels to wet areas. Do not rub the offensive mess into carpet, fabric, or seams in the floor. Blot wet stains and try to soak up as much moisture as possible.

Next, apply a paste made of baking soda, water, and antibacterial hand soap. Place the baking soda in a container, add just enough water to make the baking soda stick together then add a drop or two of soap and mix. Cover the soiled area thoroughly with the paste, and press down gently. Once the baking soda dries, remove as much as possible then vacuum the area.

For tough stains and set in stains, try gently scrubbing with antibacterial soap. Make a lather from the soap and a bit of water, and rub the soiled area gently, using only the lather. Rub in a circular motion. Let the lather stand for a few minutes, then continue with a clean rag that has been slightly dampened with warm water. Lay another clean, dry rag over the spot, and press it into the carpet to help absorb any moisture. You can also use carpet or upholstery cleaners that are approved for your furnishings. Some are specially formulated for pet stains or pet odors.
