Cleaning With Baking Soda

Do you have baking soda in the pantry? Do you use it only for baking? Well, bring it out of the pantry because it can do so much more than just make cakes rise. Baking soda is one of my favorite cleaning products, it has so many uses, is inexpensive and best of all, it’s kind to the environment.

The next time you reach for a chemical laden cleaner try baking soda, you will be amazed at what it can do!

Some of my favorite uses:
• Baking soda is a gentle scrubber, you can even use it on glass to remove stickers and sap, plus it works well on stains on tile, oven doors and grout.

• It is a great freshener, we all know it will freshen the refrigerator but you can also put some in a container in closets, sprinkle it in your teenager’s smelly shoes and deodorize carpet.

• Baking soda will also remove grease from carpet, just sprinkle it on, let it sit for a while and vacuum.

• It will clean burnt on food off pots and pans, sprinkle, cover with lemon juice, add water and let sit overnight.

• Oven cleaner, can you imagine cleaning the oven without a gas mask? Just sprinkle with baking soda, spray with vinegar, wait twenty minutes and wipe off, stubborn spots can be scrubbed with additional baking soda.

• Baking soda made into a paste with water will remove crayon from most surfaces.

• Make a paste and polish silverware.

• Mix baking soda with vinegar to remove rust from cast iron pans.

• Mixed with plain table salt it makes a very effective scouring powder.

Give just one of these ideas a try and you will be a convert. It’s wonderful to know that you are cleaning in a way that doesn’t leave chemicals behind for your children or pets and also doesn’t contribute to indoor air pollution. I buy the biggest box I can find so I always have plenty on hand. I love not having so many cleansers I can’t find the one I want, not to mention the money that stays in my pocket because I’m not buying all that stuff. What have you used baking soda to clean?
