Cloth Paper Scissors – Magazine Review

Cloth Paper Scissors is a unique and creative magazine that makes me drool. Published six times a year by Interweave Press, it is a magazine devoted to collage, mixed media, and artistic discovery.

The magazine covers many types of fiber arts and collage including altered books, art dolls, visual art journal, rubber stamping, and assemblage. The featured crafts are truly works of art. Even though are beyond anything I am doing, I still learn a great deal from this publication. They cover a lot of basic techniques like glazing, how to sew on paper, and how to use rubber stamps in new ways. I love the focus of mixed media, and the extreme and unexpected creativity of the projects.

Past issues have covered art handbags, how to keep a creative sketchbook, how to print on tissue paper, how to make your own stamps, directions for story boxes made from tiny tins, and how to make wall hangings from altered books.

Each issue has reviews of related mixed media books, reviews of favorite art products, peaks into the studios and lives of the artists, and letters from readers. Each issue also covers a challenge to their readers. One recent fun challenge was to create wearable art. Winners of the challenge are published in later issues. The reader will find lots of websites listed for extra inspiration as well as addresses for special products.

I would recommend Cloth Paper Scissors to crafters, artists, scrapbookers, anyone looking for inspiration, and those into altered art. The issues are $7.99 on the newsstand, but much less for a year’s subscription.
