In preparations from our daughter’s birth and my intention to continue with our decision to co sleep with our children, I purchased a mini co sleeper that could be attached to the side of the bed. We realized that it would be very difficult to have both children in our bed with us. I did not want to kick our son out of our bed; I truly enjoy having him with us and knowing that he was doing well.

He is such a sweet little man and has the habit of giving me hugs and kisses before he falls asleep whispering “I love you, mommy.” Not wanting to stop co sleeping with our son, I decided that getting a co sleeper for our unborn daughter was the best compromise. Regardless, we were working on transitioning our son to his own bed and he did sleep in his bed for part of the night most nights and the entire night occasionally. Once our daughter was born, I was expecting the same situation the we had experienced with our son. I figured she would need to cluster feed and, in the beginning sleep on my chest as her brother did.

However, she was a much better sleeper right from the start. The first few nights I tried to get her to sleep in the co sleeper (which we attached to the bed before she was born), but she would not stay asleep. I chose not to insist that she sleep in the co sleeper, I preferred that she be right next to me anyway. This was combined with my previous experience nursing in the side laying position and we were off to a wonderful co sleeping start, with her in the bed with us.
