Completing Personal Progress With Your Young Woman

One of the best ways you can help your Young Women with Personal Progress is to complete the program yourself. If you are a Young Women’s leader you can earn the medallion with your girls. As a parent you will not be eligible for the medallion, but you can only grow spiritually from completing the experiences. I think that example is one of the best ways to teach, as I talked about in another blog yesterday. A few years ago, I served in the Young Women’s presidency for my ward. During that time all the leaders in my ward were actively working on their Personal Progress. One Young Women’s leader in our stake had earned the complete award seven different times, because she would start over once she had completed it.

This makes a difference to your girls, because they know it is important to you. You can have them sign you off on the different experiences and projects. As you talk to your young women or to your daughter about what you’ve learned, they can see that spiritual growth is a continual process. It is also easier for them to listen to you, if they know that they are not just listening to an empty lecture. Your actions will show them that you mean what you are teaching them.

I know that everyone is busy. It can seem overwhelming to start on this, but don’t let yourself be overwhelmed. Most of the experiences can be completed with less than a half an hour of reading. Usually after that you have a time period of a couple of weeks to apply the principle in your life, and then you write about it in your journal. You don’t need to work on more than one or two at a time. In fact, it is usually more effective to really focus on just one thing, rather than trying to get everything done at once. If your daughter is open to working on the experiences at the same time as you, you can work on them together. If not continue working anyway. Your example will make a difference. A quiet example reaches a lot further than angry words.

You can view the guide online. Your daughter should receive a guide when she moves up to Young Women’s. Personal Progress is a program that is designed to encourage spiritual growth, and can benefit anyone who tries it.
