Computer Updates and Maintenance

Perhaps you are more patient and efficient than I am and you actually do all those computer updates and routine maintenance checks on a regular basis? For me, it seems like those little yellow-framed boxes are popping up on my computer constantly: “Update Needed” or “Check Status.” While I know in the back of my head that they are an important element to keeping my business computer in working order, it can be so time consuming! The last thing I want to do after signing on in a fit of inspiration is to have to “restart” my computer in order for the updates to take effect!

For some, scheduling in weekly and monthly updates help keep them on track. I am not quite that organized and for me, it tends to be something I do when I’ve got the extra time and are in the right frame of mind. This means that I occasionally set aside a morning or afternoon when I have other non-computer tasks to work on to run all the scans and checks and updates. From what I have been told, the most important is my virus protection. As long as I keep that reasonably up-to-date, my computer sales person told me I could have faith that I was doing all I could to protect my computer from getting any viruses or worms or whatever they’re called. While I get annoyed at waiting for things to “update” and check, and I do often wonder if I really need all those alerts and “most recent updates”–I am not savvy enough to evaluate what I should pay attention to and what I shouldn’t so I err on the side of caution.

In my dream world, however, technology would slow down just a bit so I didn’t have to update my software, hardware, and everything else on a daily basis. I wouldn’t mind being “in the green” a little more often and not having to see all those yellow alerts. I know, however, that since I’m running a home business in real time (and not “the good old days) that regular computer maintenance, scanning, and updates are imperative.
