Consider Using Scents

We have talked about so many different ways to get your business to stand out in the market place, and various ways to use marketing and promotions to spread the word about your products and services, but recently someone told me about a tactic that I haven’t really written about–scent. Seems this person uses her version of “aromatherapy” to make her marketing materials stand out in the crowd.

As it was told to me, she spritzes her postcards, invoices and other card stock and mailing materials with a little diluted essential oil. She said she uses a citrus-scent since she believes that stimulates people and puts them in a positive mood. I know that I use scents in my house to make it smell a certain way and create a mood, and I choose my candles, shampoo and soap based on the way they smell–so why not use scents in our business marketing too? I imagine there are different scents that are best suited to different types of business and industries–some must make people feel mellow and relaxed (lavender), while others make a person feel stimulated and inspired (orange, lemon or citrus).

I imagine that one could put a little scent in packing materials or in a box or bag before shipment or delivery, or even a little potpourri or other scented item that is going to a customer could probably do the trick. We’ve all probably heard about the importance of a house smelling good when it is being shown to potential buyers, so why not other businesses too? I would love to hear from any others who have tried scent, or are using various scents to help them sell their products or pitch their services. I am always interested in and open to discovering new ideas for how to make a small home business stand out amongst the masses–is scent one of those things that can give us a leg up?
