Costumes and Clothes – Extending the Life of a Child’s Wardrobe

Don’t pack up or give away those Halloween costumes, infant onesies or adorable overalls just yet. These articles of clothing from a prior holiday or previous year can be recycled in numerous creative and fun ways. This idea will also help out the pocketbook and wallet!

When it comes to those old Halloween costumes, consider keeping them in the drawer or closet to be used during future dress-up playtime. Many young kids, especially girls it seems, love to play dress up with their friends and/or dollies. All the old witch, ballerina and princess outfits should be put to work post-October 31st! They are perfectly capable of handling the double-duty and by extending the lives of these costumes you will also be spreading out their costs (often very expensive – be in real dollars or in man/woman hours patching them together by hand). Getting extra use out of prior years Halloween costumes allows you to avoid buying separate dress-up-only specific clothing for your child’s fairytale time activities.

You should also be able to get extra use out of those oh-so-cute and oh-so-tiny infant tees, bodysuits and diapers. Can you believe your child was ever that small? As your child outgrows these items of kiddie clothing, pick out a few pieces and put them aside. Let your children use them to dress up their teddy bears. Think about how cute your baby looked in that special little dress, wouldn’t her favorite snuggly rag doll or bear look just as stunning in it? Your little ones are sure to get a kick out of dressing their cuddly friends up in their own old baby clothes. This is the best kind of fun – a blast for the kids and cheap for us parents!

As an added bonus for your child, track down a picture of your child in one of those outfits you saved, then take a picture of the doll or stuffed animal wearing it. Put those two photos side-by-side in a frame for them to have on display in their bedroom or playroom.

Let’s face it, clothes made especially for dolls and stuffed animals are a big expense and drain on the family budget – but there is no need to even go there, for you probably have enough pants, shirts, socks and hats laying around to outfit the entire Build and Bear store!
