Countdown to Halloween

Tomorrow we officially begin decorating our home for Halloween.

Despite the fact that Target and Wal-Mart started selling Halloween merchandise the day after Labor Day, I refuse to display a single pumpkin, bat or scarecrow until October first.

I just cleared off the kitchen table and emptied the craft closet, so bright and early tomorrow morning my daughter and I can get cracking on these homemade Halloween decorations:

CARAMEL APPLE CRAFT

Materials:

Wooden apples

Styrofoam plates

Caramel colored paint

Craft sticks

Mod Podge

Chopped nuts

Wax paper

Cellophane

Ribbon

Directions:

Paint wooden apples with caramel-colored paint. Be sure to be generous with the paint to mimic the thickness of a real caramel apple. You may need three to four coats of paint.

Cut a craft stick in half.

Place one end of the craft stick in Mod Podge and allow it to dry thoroughly.

Pour some Mod Podge into a bowl, and then use a paintbrush to thoroughly cover the apple.

Pour some chopped nuts onto a plate.

Brush the apple with another thick layer of the Mod Podge and roll the apple into the nuts.

Place the apple onto the wax paper and allow to dry overnight.

You can display the apples on a tray in the kitchen or den or wrap them in cellophane and tie with a ribbon to give as a gift. Just make sure the gift recipient knows that the apples are not edible.

PAPER MACHE PUMPKIN

Materials:

Orange and yellow tissue paper

Vaseline

Large balloon

Flour

Water

Salt

Directions:

Inflate balloon to pumpkin size.

Smear Vaseline all over the balloon.

Place one part flour to five parts water with a dash of salt and boil for three minutes.

Tear orange tissue into strips and apply four layers, let dry, then add three to four more layers.

Cut yellow tissue to create face and adhere with flour/water paste.
Allow to dry for a few hours.

Pop balloon and hang or sit pumpkin as part of Halloween display.
