Creating an Inviting Dinner Table

A few years ago I attended a class at my church on homemaking. I remember the woman who taught shared some ideas on how to make your dinner table more inviting. At the time I had small children, thinking more about how I was going to keep the food on the table rather than on the floor or in the dog’s mouths…let alone worry about decorating the table.

Now that my children are older, those ideas have been creeping up in my mind. And I would like to try implementing some of them.

But first we have to deal with the elephant in the room…perhaps you don’t even remember the last time you saw the top of your dinner table. I know some families prefer to use their tables to hold papers, laundry and other items.

Most of the time my table is clutter-free. I try very hard to keep it that way because otherwise, it makes eating together more difficult. If it’s piled with stuff then we end up going our separate ways to eat.

So if you haven’t seen the top of your table in a while, you are going to want to clear it off and find a new home for those things. Then you might think about a centerpiece.

A table looks much nicer with a centerpiece. One of the things I remember from this class was the woman sharing how we should also change up the centerpiece depending on the season.

Beside centerpieces you can also decorate your dinner table with flowers, tablecloths, placemats, cloth napkins, your best china, new dinnerware and other creative ideas that you can think of.

Change your dinner room table decorations weekly or bi-weekly, just to keep things fresh and new. Your family will appreciate the effort you put into it.

What other ideas do you have for an inviting dinner table?
