June is typically when the world stops to celebrate dads and grads. However, if you are planning to create a scrapbook honoring that special father, grandfather, uncle or brother this Dad’s Day, then you’d better get your shovel out. You’ll need it to dig through all the photos you’ll want to feature in your Father’s Day-themed memory album.
Fortunately, you can save the heavy lifting for pictures and memorabilia since most scrapbook supply shops have plenty of fresh paper and embellishments which you can use to make your Father’s Day layouts pop. Several companies, including Masterpiece Studios offers pre-printed scrapbook paper made exclusively for Father’s Day page designs. One of my favorites is their traditional brown and blue paper which features the word “Father” in the lower right hand corner. You can also get printed or patterned, acid-free scrapbook paper which includes the following phrases: “World’s Best Father,” “A father’s love,” “Fathers like you are precious and few,” “A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.”
There are pros and cons to using printed paper filled with heartwarming phrases. If you are short on time or creative energy, then pre-printed paper may come in handy as you don’t have to do much to embellish it. However, if you are not fond of the busy background, you could layer it with plain pieces of paper in masculine shades of blue, gray or green. Another option is to stick with simple designs such as stripes or dots rather than using paper with pre-printed words or phrases.
Simple backgrounds are key, especially if you are using a ton of embellishments. For example, if you are creating a layout inspired by your father’s favorite hobby, such as football, consider bypassing the pre-printed paper and instead draw a goal post and hang a small banner with your page title emblazoned on it between the uprights. Or, if your dad loves to barbeque in the backyard, you could design a grill top with strips of paper and add fun food stickers to the layout, along with photos of your Pop cooking up an outdoor meal.
