Dad’s Losing It: Baby’s Got Back (Problems)

My workout schedule has been derailed by an awfully sore lower back. Eight-year-old girls hawking Thin Mint Cookies sabotaged my good eating habits. Not a great weekend!

Beginning early last week, this ole’ back of mine started to feel a bit stiff. The condition regressed into the weekend. While my back pain did not stand in the way of my two workouts last week, it has since sidelined me and I am feeling particularly sedentary right now. Fortunately, during this time, the food going into my mouth has been fairly decent, save for handfuls of those delicious annual goodies in green boxes.

My wife, daughter and I spent the better part of this past Sunday cooking for the week. We made healthy, hearty meals that double as wonderful lunchtime leftovers; a rich and beefy stew with carrots (nice and mushy, just about the only way I’ll eat them), an enormous sausage and ground beef lasagna, and potato leek soup. Having this much good food packed up for the work week is huge for us. Since we have pretty much abandoned all lunchmeat, tasty leftovers are the main player in our midday menus. Having a productive Sunday sets the table for a successful week of eating at work.

Back to my back for a moment. Bad backs seem to run in my family. My father and oldest brother have each had hernia surgeries within the past twelve months. Because of this trend, I am sure the knife (or laser) is in my not-too-distant future. It does not help that I am quite tall and a smidge wide. Doing simple tasks like bathing my daughter bring on a blunt, dull and persistent pain. I need to search out exercises that spare my lower back and find them soon (I am willing to trade for pain in another area!)

I arrived home tonight to about 3 inches of snow and was able to do some shoveling and play outside with my little lady. I feel a bit more physically active that I have over the last four days and the back is holding up pretty well. Now let’s see if I can get out of bed tomorrow!
