Dancing with Your Dog: Music and Costume Ideas

Ever since I interviewed Beth Terrell and she introduced me to the world of puppy dancing, I find myself thinking about music and costume ideas. I swear, once we get Murph’s paw healed, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if I enroll us in a puppy dancing class. There are so many opportunities to get creative!

Music Ideas

Beth may have been the catalyst that got me started thinking about dancing with my dog, but the Greatest American Dog’s Dancing with the Dogs episode was the one that got me thinking about the music.

In that episode, the contestants had to pick which type of music they’d like to dance to. Their choices were Ragtime, Rockabilly, Hip Hop, Latin, Country, Disco, Classical, Ballet, and Broadway.

I could always go with Murph’s “Ol’ Red” theme song. I could dress up like a prisoner and get Murph a warden costume. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, click here to see the Blake Shelton music video on YouTube.)

But it might be too slow. I think Murph and I would need something a little funkier. What that might be I still don’t know. All I do know is I could really have a field day with the costumes and props with that song, such as lanterns, handcuffs, and shot guns. (Not a real shot gun, of course. Heaven knows Murph’s had enough accidents as it is lately!)

But speaking of costumes…

Costumes

The same day my In the Company of Dogs Early Holiday 2008 catalog arrived, so did the Halloween edition of my Doctors Foster and Smith –complete with Halloween costumes for dogs. (Oh, how I wish my mom was still around to look through it with me. I know she’d have lots of new picks for us.)

Because of the song I mentioned above, their sheriff costume naturally caught my eye. But then so did their Shrek, Darth Vader, and Zorro costumes.

If he dressed as Shrek, I could dress as Princess Fiona. Then we could dance to music from the movie, such as the song I’m a Believer.

The trouble with the Darth Vader costume is I can’t pull off a Princess Leia getup. (Well, maybe I could do her white dress from the very first movie, which is technically the fourth one in the trilogy.) The obvious choice for soundtrack here would be the movie’s theme song.

Zorro would be trickier. The music would be easy. I think the theme from the 1950s TV series would be a hoot. What kind of costume I’d wear would be more challenging. Would I be a bad guy? Or a lovely senorita Zorro’s rescuing?

See what I mean? So many music and costume ideas, so much fun to be had dancing with my dog!
