Deck out Your Dorm (or Help the Kids)

So, a dorm room doesn’t usually offer a ton of extra space, especially if you have a roommate. That doesn’t mean you can’t squeeze in a little holiday decorating and a few festive touches. One of the best ways to make an impact is of course with color. The good thing is that if you choose just the right color, you can make it work through Thanksgiving and Christmas, instead of having to get all new stuff after just a few weeks.

Another good thing is that it’s easy to create a festive look. If you have artwork on your walls, consider slipping a print over your existing art temporarily. This will help you avoid the expense of a frame. You can find inexpensive prints from some of the most wonderful art, and it will make a big difference. It’s a great way to incorporate holiday images or colors without using up extra space or spending a lot of time or money to make an impact.

If you don’t have artwork, pick up a print and an inexpensive frame. Unfinished ones are usually affordable, and you can paint them or stain them to your taste.

Next, choose a few items that pull from the colors in your artwork. Try to incorporate some deep reds or chocolate browns because these will be great colors to carry over to Christmas. Both look good with green or even white or cream.

On that note, you may want to add a throw to the end of your bed in one of those deep tones. Then pick up some fabric to recover pillows or make a couple accent pillows if you don’t have any (it’s easier to buy a couple cheap ones at a discount store and cover them if you can’t find any in the color you want). Grab some fabric in similar tones to cover bare surfaces. Adding color and layers will add warmth. You can find nice fabric placemats that will work great on top of nightstands and end tables.

Next, all you have to do is add a few small accessories throughout the space. Pinecones are good because they too will work for both Thanksgiving and Christmas (and they’re cheap if not free!). Instead of an empty vase on you table, fill it with pinecones.
