Decorate on a Dime – The Basics (2)

Looking to start a home decorating project, but don’t have a lot of money? Decorating your home is expensive, yet often makes your home feel better and more relaxing. So how do you go about decorating an entire home, yet saving money in the process? Read on.

More – Discover

I started this section in the last article, but I have more to say on discovering where to get your decorative items and home furnishings but save in the process. Many second hand items, have imperfections that can be repaired, but some are damaged beyond repair. This doesn’t render the item unusable though. Consider first, if the imperfection is something that gives the piece personality? No? Okay, then consider covering it. Use fabric or a scarf to cover table top scratches. Cover a cushion that needs repair with some fabric. Place items on a nightstand that is scratched up, that will help to cover the imperfections.

Beyond the Furniture

Decorating is not just about furniture. It’s about window treatments, and paint, and bedding, and table cloths and framed art on the walls. How do you frugally work around these add-ons? Easy as pie. First, again keep your eye out on garage sales, yard sales, antique stores and flea markets. You can either purchase used curtains or valances that match your room, or you can obtain fabric and make your own. Making your own curtains is easy, and often you can search Online for a pattern. You can also just drape a piece of fabric or silk over a curtain rod, without any sewing. Be sure to measure where you want them, so the pieces match. Picture frames can be had almost anywhere, and most of the time are fairly inexpensive. You can cut your own mats to frame your prints, and you can decorate the frames with paint or other embellishments to make them match your décor. An eclectic collection of frames on a wall with various prints, looks great!

Now that we have worked on the basics, its time to get a bit more technical. This week in the frugal living blog, you will find some great articles helping you save money and decorate on a dime. Let me know if there is anything specific you need help with.
