Many parents feel a disposable diaper to judge if it needs to be changed. But unless the diaper has been on for so long that it is leaking, the weight and the smell of the diaper is a better indication of whether or not it is wet.
Diaper manufacturers refer to pee or poop as “the insult.” In other words, they do studies about how much “insult” a diaper can absorb and how the diaper handles with different types of “insult.”
Taking off your baby’s socks before changing a poopy diaper will cut down on the number of socks you go through, as socks seem to attract poop like a magnet.
Keep the fancy cover off of the diaper pad, or you’ll be changing it every time you change the baby. Instead, opt for the regular vinyl surface which is easy to wipe down, or place a washcloth or burp cloth between the pad and the baby.
The average baby goes through 4,700 diapers before he is fully potty trained.
If you catch your baby grunting or making faces or if you here the poop hit the diaper, wait a few minutes before you change her or you might find that there was more to come out, sometimes while she is still bare bottomed. This is especially true for very young babies.
Keep one or two safe toys at the changing table. Having something “new” to hold will keep your baby occupied and less likely to fidget while you change him.
According to SheKnows Pregnancy & Baby, in olden days (Elizabethan), babies were changed on average once every four days. Now that is a lot of diaper rash.
