Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Hi-Ho Silver!

We have a very special guest right now at the cats-only boarding facility: a friendly little cat we call Silver.

I’ve mentioned our feral cat efforts before — we leave leftover food out for strays and feral cats. When a new stray comes by to nibble, we try to catch him or her for a check-up. The folks on the vet side will do a full exam, give the cat a round of vaccinations, and spay/neuter as needed.

Last weekend, I met Silver. He was out by the food dish as I pulled into the parking lot. I crouched at the edge of the pavement and waited; after a minute, he came to my hand. I gave him a pat and headed inside. My coworker said that they’d been trying to catch him for an exam, so I went back out armed with treats to try and lure him in. He came right back to me — what a sweetheart!

He was covered in fleas and sticky burrs — nothing a good brushing and some medicine won’t fix. And he just LOVED the brushing.

Silver’s living the sweet life at the boarding facility right now. All the kibbles and mush he can eat, soft beds to sleep on, and no more burrs in his long, silky fur. We all give him lots of love and cuddles. He’s un-neutered, so the veterinarian will be doing that some time over the next few weeks (when they have a space in the schedule).

And then? We can try to find him a home. Out of our last three homeless pets, two of them ended up going home with staff members and the third was quickly adopted from a local shelter. So I’m pretty confident that Silver will have a happy ending of his own soon enough.

He’s gorgeous — long, silver hair, big blue eyes — and such a sweetheart. Every day I make time to sit down with him, and he climbs right onto my lap. What a purr engine this guy has! He’s a total lovebug.
