Diary of an Overweight Mom: Day 14—Out of Town Guests and The Spaghetti Factory

Morning Weight: 179.8

Well, my parents came into town this weekend. The result? A wonderful barbecue and a filling meal out at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Going there, I knew I was going to blow my sensible eating plan. But I tried to plan for it as best as I could. I didn’t eat a lot during the day, but when it came time for dinner, I was so hungry, I threw all caution to the wind and dived right in to the cheesy garlic bread, salad, pasta, and yes, the spumoni ice cream. I’m not proud, but I don’t hang my head in shame. Why? Because this is life. Life isn’t always regimented to fit a diet plan. Sometimes you just have to enjoy a meal. The important thing is to not let that one meal become several.

I’m sure the scale will be up tomorrow. Hopefully not a lot. But I made the choice to eat too much at dinner, knowing the consequences. And you know what? It was good! That said, I’m not going out to dinner tonight.

Today I want to talk about having guests over. Are you like me—do you love to cook? This can be both good and bad. Because I love to cook, I also love to see the expressions on people’s faces when they taste what I’ve made for them. I enjoy the simple satisfaction of knowing that my hands prepared a meal others could enjoy. However, this often leads to fixing meals that are higher in fat or carbohydrates than anyone at the table needs. My goal in the future is to work on perfecting some low-calorie, healthy dishes that my friends and family can enjoy. That way, no one will leave the table unbuttoning their pants to be able to breathe or thinking about the gym.

How did your weekend go?

Here’s how my day shaped up:

Breakfast: A banana and vanilla coffee

Lunch: Peanut butter and jelly sandwich on multigrain bread

Dinner: Old Spaghetti Factory (cheese bread, salad, spaghetti, spumoni ice cream)
