Diary of an Overweight Mom: Day 5—WHAT Was I Thinking???

Morning Weight: 180.6

Total Weight Loss: 4.6 pounds

WHAT was I thinking? Why on earth would I think I could bake shortbread while on the first week of my new “diet?” But I did. My husband loves shortbread and it’s super easy to make. So against my better judgment today, when I should’ve been walking on the treadmill or drinking some vitamin-filled shake, I was working butter into flour with my hands. I’d like to tell you I made the shortbread then walked away. But if you’ve ever smelled shortbread baking in the oven, you can understand why that’s nearly impossible. I made the shortbread. I baked the shortbread. I cut the shortbread. I ATE the shortbread.

In all fairness though, I only ate one piece. And not a gigantic one, either. Except that I also ate the other half of my daughter’s piece (WHAT? Don’t look at me like that—she didn’t want it!). Still, I would usually have come back for more, but this time I did not.

Temptations are everywhere. How do you handle them? Avoiding the obvious is the best route of course. But, hello—I write for the food blog—obviously I like to cook. I also like to eat. I like to experiment with recipes and create meals and snacks that make my friends and family say “ooh, aah.” I’m very glad at this point that I chose to end the low-carb craze and opt for simply reducing my portions and focusing on healthier choices. Weekends are always tough though. I am actually looking forward to the start of the week when I don’t feel the need to cook “special” meals and can eat my fruit and veggies a little easier.

How did your day shape up? Here’s how mine went:

Breakfast: Banana (we were busy cleaning the house)

Lunch: 1 apple, a turkey and cheese roll-up, ½ cup Cheeze-its (yes, I know, I’m addicted to the darn crackers)

Dinner: Manti (Turkish Ravioli—but I only ate half my usual portion) and tomato-avocado salad with red onion and limejuice

Snack: Shortbread

Okay, not the best eating day, but certainly nothing insane. I deem it a success…however, the scale may disagree tomorrow.
