Disneyland’s World of Color

Tonight Disneyland premieres a beautiful new exhibit called the World of Color. Playing exclusively in the evening, World of Color is a high-tech water and light show celebrating the magic of Disney. Powered jets shoot water up to 200 feet above spectators’ heads, and rotate to let the water dance amidst colorful beams of light.

Within the water and light play scenes and clips from famous Disney films, all set to music. The type of music isn’t specified, but a New York Times profile on Bob Iger mentioned he tweaked it to sound more contemporary. Frankly I’d be surprised if they played anything but a Disney soundtrack on top of the show.

Already Disneyland’s made some major adjustments to promote their newest and much-anticipated attraction. The area around Paradise Bay in the California Adventure Park was redesigned to provide better views of World of Color, and nearby restaurants Ariel’s Grotto and Wine Country Trattoria feature Preferred Viewing sections.

World of Color should look like a fancier, jazzed-up version of this colored fountain.

But that’s not all Disneyland’s doing to highlight the World of Color. Lately it seems like Disney’s throwing around opportunities to win a free pass to one of the parks, and the latest revolves around the new attraction.

The execs behind World of Color have launched a web site allowing Disney fans to build a World of Color show using their own photos and videos, or pictures and clips from Disney films. Users can enter their completed video into a contest where winners receive a free Disneyland Resort Vacation.

The Create Your Own World of Color site actually comes with two options: the artistically-inclined can put together the show completely on their own, just using Disney’s provided graphics/effects and software. Only the videos made that way are eligible to win the free Disneyland trip. The Create Your Own Video contest ends on July 12, so anyone who wants to enter needs to make their video and submit it by then.

For those who just want to put together a fun show without too much effort, the site provides another option. Users only have to pick a theme and provide photos/videos if they want to, and let the program take care of the rest. This option works best for anyone who just wants to make a quick pretty and colorful backdrop for their favorite photos and videos.

World of Color certainly seems like a beautiful new addition to the Disneyland park. I also think it’s really neat that park execs chose to promote the exhibit through giving someone a chance to win a free Disneyland trip.
