Do it Yourself Look of Leather

Have you ever tried a faux technique that creates the look of leather? Here is a really simple, affordable technique that you can utilize, with things your probably already have around the house.

You will need brown paper bags, school glue, water, and a paintbrush. You will of course need something to apply the technique to as well. Try a lampshade, a trashcan, or apply it to a plastic tumbler or a clean, empty can to make a great faux leather penholder.

You can cut the paper into strips or squares, but this technique looks best if you rip the paper, leaving rough edges, instead of cutting the pieces evenly. Rip several pieces and try to make them different shapes and sizes. You can use grocery bags or brown paper lunch bags, but make sure there is no writing on the pieces you want to use.

Next, mix two parts school glue and one part water. Paint both sides of the paper with the glue mixture, and then apply to the object you chose. You want to saturate the paper, but don’t get it so wet that it drips.

Overlap each piece of paper as you place it on the lampshade or other object. If any pieces seem dry after you apply them, brush them lightly with the glue mixture. Continue this process until the entire object is covered with brown paper. You can either use pieces with smooth edges for the edge, or trim the edges when finished.

Apply stain, glaze, or watered down paint if desired. This step is not necessary since the paper and glue will create a nice, worn leather look, but you can add this step if you want deeper color or a more variegated design. Simply wipe on the stain or other color with a rag and wipe away excess.

This treatment creates a charming effect that works great in a living area, den, library, or office.
