Dog Eats Beehive, Wins Pet Insurance Award

beehive If you own a dog, you probably have a story about when your dog ate some completely bizarre non-food item. What started out as an intense, stressful, day, and a frantic trip to the vet, eventually turned into a funny story that you can share with family and friends. A pet insurance company recently was collecting stories like these, of the most unusual pet insurance claims. The winner was awarded the VPI Hambone Award.

VPI is a pet insurance company. If you have a cat or a dog, and have been considering picking up some pet health insurance you can find lots of helpful information about it on their website. They offer cat insurance, dog insurance, and bird & exotic pet insurance. You can also see a list of the most frequently asked questions about their different pet insurance policies, and the corresponding answers.

The winner of the second annual VPI Hambone Award has been selected! Pet owners sent in their stories about things their pets did that resulted in some very unusual pet insurance claims. After collecting up many interesting stories, VPI allows people to vote on which one was the most bizarre. This year, people voted on the stories in August. The winner captured 30% of the vote!

The 2010 winner of the VPI Hambone Award was a Labrador named Ellie, who lives with owners in California. Ellie ate a beehive that contained pesticides, as well as thousands of dead bees, and then was treated by a veterinarian. The Hambone Award looks like a bronze ham, sitting on a black, round, platform. Ellie won the award, and also a basket of toys and doggie treats. Rest assured that all of the nominees that competed for this award made full recoveries, and their owners received reimbursement from VPI for eligible expenses.

If you have an interesting story about something that your dog did, which resulted in an unusual claim on your pet insurance, you might consider sharing it. VPI is currently accepting nominees whose stories will compete for the 2011 VPI Hambone Award. Perhaps your dog’s “Hambone worthy mishap” will win next time!
