Don’t Dread Sundays!

Do you ever find yourself dreading your Sunday? Are you so stressed out and tired from attending church that the rest of the day seems shot? How can you keep the Sabbath Day holy and make it a positive experience for your children?

Sundays are a day that we set aside to worship the Lord. It is a day of rest and renewal, but there are times when it seems difficult to find that peace that the Sabbath day brings. There are times when I wish my children would let me just have the nap I used to take every Sunday afternoon.

However I have found activities and attitudes that have helped me to enjoy the Sabbath day with my family. First I have found that it is essential to spend Saturday getting ready for church the next day. If everything is ready, and church shoes are found before we are walking out the door it sets the tone for the entire meeting and the rest of the day. Additionally being prepared for lessons makes church much more meaningful.

After church I have found that including my children in meal preparation gives our family a chance to spend time together laughing and talking. It is a great time to teach my children the joy of cooking and to get them comfortable in the kitchen. Our Sunday meals are not elaborate, but they are a time we gather together.

Additionally when we focus on spending quality time together, playing games or reading together our Sundays are much more peaceful. These activities can include writing in our journals, singing, being silly and just enjoying each other’s company. The tone we set on Sunday will help our children learn to appreciate this special day or grow to hate it. The attitude of the parent is one of the most vital pieces to celebrating the Sabbath at home each week.
