It’s Sunday morning, you’re waking up in your nice comfy bed, the house is quiet, kids are still sleeping and this is your last morning to sleep in before the Monday morning work day. You have a mountain of clothes to fold and dishes to do, and the last thing you want to do is get up to make yourself presentable enough to go to church.
Many of us, if not most, have been there at one point or another. It’s not always about being disinterested in worshiping God; often it’s about feeling tired, or even a bit lazy. You might even feel a bit guilty when this happens because it’s not like church is an all day event; it’s only a couple hours out of our whole week.
Sometimes it’s not even about getting up in the morning. For certain people, it’s about wanting to avoid a group of people. I’ll confess there have been times when we’ve arrived at church late to find the parking lot is filled. Rather than parking on the street and walking, we decide to praise God at the Coast. Hey, I am not saying I’m proud of myself.
The last place Satan wants to see you is praising God in church! I notice if I get my tail in gear and make it in the doors of church, I really do feel fine. I enjoy the company of other believers, praising God, learning about the Word and praying. Paul tells us in Hebrews 10:25 not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together. It really is important we come together to build ourselves up in the truth of God’s word. After attending a service, I can’t recall a time that I’ve ever regretted it. Usually I’m really glad I did because I feel revived for the week.
God understands that we are ill sometimes. He also understands we may need a vacation and aren’t able to be in a service. The point is, He knows our hearts. We can’t deceive God. If you do not want to go to church because you don’t feel like it, maybe it’s the number one place you need to be.
