Don’t Lose Your Most Promising Ideas

Brainstorming is a good thing for a small business owner, but you may have discovered already that your best ideas do not always come at the most convenient times. Sure, it would be great if you were sitting at your desk or at least had a pen and paper handy when those fantastic ideas descend upon you but that is not always the case. How can you be sure not to lose those most promising ideas and take advantage of a sharp mind and strong problem-solving?

There are some obvious ideas for keeping track of those grand ideas: recording them, putting them into your portable electronic devise, writing them down, etc. I have also known people who called their voice mail and left messages for themselves (a great way to keep from losing pertinent information I think.) But all of this is just the first step. At some point, you need to take all of these notes and reminders and organize them into a file or system so that you can access them on the long term.

Even creating a manila file folder with the words: “ideas” or “brainstorming” written on it can be a good way to collect all those ideas into a central place. I use a notebook and scrawl any ideas or solutions or things I would like to try on the lined pages. Since I use a spiral notebook for all sorts of things until it is full and then file it away, it is a good place to jot down any inspirations or ideas that hit me when I am anywhere (home, work, travel, grocery store, etc.) Having a way to capture all those ideas is important in keeping the flow of brainstorming and problem-solving going. Not to mention, you never know when you will want to go back and look through your notes for past ideas and inspiration.
