Book Summary as per Amazon.com:
Sometimes it’s the simple choices-like switching diet soda for regular; selecting a less-caloric sandwich at the fast food joint; stopping at just one dip into the candy bowl; filling up on salad rather than bread before your main course; or taking the kids for a bike ride instead of hanging out in front of the TV-that make the pounds melt away almost effortlessly. Whether you’re a junk food junkie, an emotional eater, or even a mindless muncher, Good Housekeeping Drop 5 Pounds offers hundreds of ideas for small and very doable changes in your diet that can add up to significant weight loss.
My Review:
I have to admit that I do not read diet books. Why? Because the concept of losing weight is easy and I do not need a book to make it complicated. Putting what you know into practice and sticking to a lifestyle change is the hard part. If you read through the archives you will not find one book on weight loss reviewed by me. When the opportunity came to review this book I almost turned it down. Before accepting the offer I looked the book up on Amazon. When I learned the concept of the book was not about a crazy diet or helping your self esteem but tangible ways to truly think about what you eat, I grew curious.
I have on more confession to make. I am not sure where to begin other than to say I love this book. It sits on my desk and will remain in arms reach at all times. The recipes are for real people who shop at real stores and use ingredients you can actually purchase at those stores. The strategies given are realistic for real dieters. This book is one you can implement from the minute you get your hands on it. You start by taking a diet decoder quiz which pinpoints your diet pitfalls. Believe it or not the book actually addresses those pitfalls in a manner that one can easily follow. For instance if you love fast food this book will give you the ability to make proper choices and avoid high calorie and high fat options. You may even be surprised how much fat and calories are in your favorite burger or even your favorite latte. Instead of raking you over the coals for eating fast food, drinking soda or giving into munchies, this book gives you options to put you back in control. I have to say my favorite parts are the all the food comparisons from the amount of calories in fast food fries verses oven baked fries to common foods you purchase at the grocery store. There is even a list of how many minutes of exercise it would take you to burn off some common tempting foods. The book is full of so much practical information that you come out feeling empowered and not defeated or overwhelmed. Lastly, the book is colorful and well organized which makes it easy to read and skim through when you are searching for a page. I highly recommend this book for all who are concerned with making proper food choices.
