Dumbo

Walt Disneys movie “Dumbo” was originally released in 1941. I can remember being a huge fan of the movie when I was younger and for a while carried around a giant stuffed Dumbo with me where ever I went.

If you’ve forgotten the plot line, the movie is about an elephant named Dumbo. His mother a circus elephant longed for a baby but when the baby was born (Dumbo) he has incredibly large ears. The other circus animals ridicule Dumbo for his ears. During the movie Dumbo tries to reunite with his mother, and come to terms with his ears.

This was one of Disney’s first releases, which is somewhat noticeable in the animation. I still feel like the movie is very good, and is perhaps even better without all the special effects added to today’s animated features. One unique fact about this movie is that it is the only Disney movie where the title character for the film never speaks. Ms. Jumbo (Dumbos mom) like Dumbo never speaks except when she says Dumbos name towards the beginning of the film.

The movie Dumbo won an academy award for best music, and scoring of a motion picture. The movie also walked away with an award from the Cannes Film Festival

The 60th Anniversary DVD comes with a lot of fun features like a read along storybook, a sing along, and two animated shorts “Elmer Elephant” and “The Flying Mouse”. Adults will enjoy listening to the audio commentary and watching the original introduction to Dumbo’s television premiere.

Dumbo is rated G and runs just a little over an hour. The movie is captivating enough to hold the attention of younger audiences, and can keep the attention of adults as well. Dumbo can be purchased where ever DVDs are sold or online at Amazon.com.
