Easter Fun in Cold Weather

Today, in Colorado, the temperatures are just below freezing. Icicles are forming everywhere from the melting snow. And we have up to three inches of snow scheduled for tonight. Not exactly ideal Easter weather. I still think of green grass, flowers, new spring dresses, and flowered hats as being Easter. But I know all the little girls in their pretty spring dresses will be covered up by their winter coats for church tomorrow.

It’s not the first Easter we’ve had snow. In our sixteen years here we’ve made more than one snow bunny instead of snowman. We discovered that the egg dye comes off on the snow. Which means it’s pretty easy to get blue eyes and a pink nose for the snow bunny.

So how does a family have fun on Easter, even when the weather is lousy? You can still have an egg hunt. Even in the snow. Or you might talk your church into holding an indoor one. Or, if you are very brave and have a good memory you can have an egg hunt inside your house. I warn you about the good memory because trust me, you don’t want to forget where those real eggs are hidden. And houses have a lot more places to hide eggs than the typical yard. If you are using plastic eggs, you don’t have to worry quite as much. Be careful with crawling babies and toddlers though. They don’t need to get hold of the eggs or candy.

What else can a family do? Bake sugar cookies and take your time decorating them. Make hot cross buns. Hold indoor bunny races, where the kids have to hop down the hall. Set out baskets or bowls for targets and aim jelly beans at them. Use thumb-prints to make a whole bunch of bunnies. Wear those new clothes anyway, and take a family picture. Start some fruit or vegetable seeds. Research the history of Peeps candy. Research the history of Easter and Easter traditions. Play some board games, or break out a puzzle.

Just remember that having lousy weather on Easter doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. And besides, “Peeps” candies float really well on a cup of hot chocolate.
