Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer

Eclipse is the third book in the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. This is a fun series focused on Bella and her relationship with a vampire Edward. What makes the story unique is that Edward’s family or coven is vegetarian. This means that they do not partake of human blood.

Eclipse picks up just where New Moon drops off. Bella has just returned from rescuing Edward from the Volturi. Bella begins the book grounded as a result of taking off to Rome without Charlie’s permission. When Charlie agrees to end Bella’s punishment, he encourages Bella to continue her friendship with Jacob Black. As Bella struggles to find balance between the friendship she has with Jacob and her love for Edward the suspense builds as Victoria continues in a hunt to revenge James’ death by killing Bella.

To make matters worse, someone is building a vampire army north in Seattle. The Cullens are worried about bringing the Volturi too close to Forks, as well as the possibility that the army might be meant to wipe them out completely. When their other vampire friends abandon them, the Cullens and the werewolf pack make an unlikely alliance to protect Forks and each other.

The book is a great read. It continues with the fun, fast and suspenseful plot of the first two in the series. It is a very clean book, with little to no swearing and no sex scenes. However the sexual tension continues to rise between Edward and Bella, and additionally between Bella and Jacob. It may be important to talk about what constitutes a healthy relationship between teenagers with your daughter if she reads this series, but otherwise the books are a fun read.

Meyer has mastered the art of storytelling and is wonderful at building a great plot with a good climax at the end. This story will suck you in. It is difficult to put down once you have started it, and so you should allow yourself time to read it. The books are a great balance of romance and suspense. I particularly love the battle scenes at the end of each book. If you loved Twilight and New Moon, then it is safe to say that you will love Eclipse as well.
