Edible Craft: Cupcake Flowers

NOTE: This craft is not for experienced decorators but to have a bit of fun. There is no messing up and no technique. This is intended for children to have fun and create unique flowers. I am far from a cake decorator so please allow for grace on my instructions.

Supplies Needed:

Cupcakes made from scratch or a cake mix.

Cupcake liners

White frosting

Food coloring

Pastry bags

Stellar (or star) tip in desired size. The bigger the tip the bigger the petal.

Petal (or rose) tip in desired size.

Chocolate chips for sunflower cupcake.

Small terracotta pots

Instructions for Sunflower Cupcake Flower:

Mix yellow food coloring to turn your white frosting to the desired color of yellow.

Apply a stellar tip to your pastry bag and fill with frosting.

Keep the liner on the cupcake and place in the terracotta pot with only the top of the cupcake exposed.

Lightly frost the top of the cupcake just to cover.
In the center apply the chocolate chips to form the center of the sunflower.

Using your pastry bag apply a dollop of frosting beginning from chips and lightly pull up your bag and touch down again at the edge to create a petal. Go all the way around until you have the desired amount of petals.

If it makes it easier you may apply the petals and then the chocolate chips. This may prevent too much frosting from getting on the chips.

Instructions for Carnation Cupcake Flower:

Divide frosting into two bowls.

Add in desired food colorings to each bowl. The example kept one half of the frosting white and the other was colored electric blue.

Apply a petal tip to your pastry bag. Fill the bag on one side with one color and the other side with the other color. This will not be neat and the colors will mix a bit inside the bag. This is fine as it will give a two-toned effect.

Place your cupcake with liner inside the terracotta pot with the top of the cupcake showing.

Using your pastry bag create a ribbon effect going around the cupcake and layering the “ribbons” as you continue through to the center of the cupcake. If you are not satisfied you may add in more “petals” one by one or more “ribbons” to create a full flower.

Tip: Allow some of the liner to show to easily remove the cupcake from the pot to eat. You can also wrap a coffee filter (the scalloped kind, paper doily or green tissue paper around the cupcake before placing in the pot. This will give a pretty effect and make it even easier to remove the cupcake.

Tip: Adding green Easter grass into the pot and around the cupcake also adds a cute effect.
