Educational Holiday Getaways

Who says kids can’t learn something while on Christmas vacation… besides not licking frozen lamp posts? The United States is home to a number of award-winning educational facilities designed to make learning fun for kids of all ages.

If you are looking for tried and true boredom busters this holiday season, consider traveling to the following:

Experience Music Project

The Seattle-based Frank Gehry-designed music mecca is a haven for rock stars in the making. Experience Music Project boasts equipment that your tween can use for his fantasy jam session, plus there’s a section that showcases the likes of Seattle’s own Pearl Jam. In addition, the Experience’s Sound Lab is one of the biggest draws. It allows youngsters to spin tunes like a world-famous DJ, play an instrument or record like the pros. Meanwhile, the On Stage experience lets kids pretend that they are starring in a live show, and then let’s them view their performance after the fact on a closed-circuit television.

John F. Kennedy Space Center

Located in Cape Canaveral, Florida, NASA’s launch headquarters gives kids a chance to explore the outer reaches of the universe without blasting off. Highlights of the Kennedy Space Center include daily astronaut-hosted lunches, tours of a full-size replica of the Explorer space shuttle and opportunities to touch real moon rocks.

Charles M. Schulz Museum

Okay, so this one’s my dream trip. As soon as I win the lottery I will be making a beeline to Santa Rosa, California, to explore the Charles M. Schulz Museum. The 27,384-square-foot space was once the home of the award-winning cartoonist. It is filled with magical memories of The Peanuts gang, including the original comic strip that appeared in 1950. Other noteworthy exhibits include a maze in the shape of Snoopy’s head, a re-creation of Schulz’s studio, cartooning workshops, craft corners and a theater, which shows documentaries and cartoons starring Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy and the rest of the gang.
