Embracing Frugality

Although we started practicing a frugal lifestyle to allow me to stay home with our first child, since then we have come a long way to embracing the lifestyle. A lot of it, I think has to do with attitude. We’ve gone from thinking, “How on earth can we figure out hoe we can afford to live?” to “I wonder what new opportunities will come our way today!”

When you really embrace frugality, you don’t have time to moan about what you don’t have, because you are too busy living life and enjoying it. You’ve cut off the bad part that is holding you back and are free.

Here is an example. Now that our family has completed our active childbearing, it is a good time for me to be able to take some time to get back into my pre-baby shape, or at least as close as I can get to it. No doubt I would enjoy a gym membership, but it wasn’t even on my mind when I began to take the time to get fit. Instead, I take advantage of the cool mornings to take long power walks (interval training since my neighborhood dips up and down steep hills), ride an ancient exercise bike, enjoy some older exercise tapes (love those 80 clothes!) and have fun thinking up new challenges to add to my routine. I didn’t give up on exercise simply because a gym membership or new equipment isn’t in store for me.

My whole family has embraced this frugal lifestyle. From inventive games that involve more sticks and rocks than electronics (last year they built fairy houses; this year they are building a rock wall) to finding ways to save money, we are a team that is hugging our priorities with joyful hearts. Our energy is focused toward having a great but frugal life.
