Essential Oils: Chamomile

Compared to other essential oils, chamomile can be a little more expensive… but it is worth the price! Chamomile is a great all-around essential oil — it is mild enough for use on all skin types and is known to be great for easing stress and tension.

Look for German chamomile or Roman chamomile, but get the German variety if you can. You’ll know you have the real deal on your hands if the essential oil has a blue-green color. Other chamomile varieties will show up as a paler yellow color. The other varieties of chamomile do the same things; the German variety is the most effective in aromatherapy blends.

Regardless of what variety of chamomile you find, you’ll have a sweet-smelling essential oil on your hands. The flower and oil smell like apples — the Spanish call the plant manzanilla — little apple — and the Greeks call chamomile “earth apples”.

Chamomile is perhaps best known for its calming influence. Do you drink chamomile tea when you can’t sleep? The scent of chamomile is soothing and relaxing; just smelling chamomile essential oil can help you unwind after a long, hard day. Using chamomile in a bath or massage blend can help you relax even further. If you are stressed, nervous, anxious, or generally tense, chamomile can help.

Chamomile is also wonderful in skin care products! It is gentle enough for use on all skin types, and is great for helping your skin retain moisture. In hair care products, chamomile can help brighten hair color and enhance highlights.

But chamomile isn’t just for beauty products! Used in muscle rubs and massage oils, chamomile can help reduce inflammation from rashes, burns, and eczema. Chamomile also helps the body fight infection by stimulating white blood cell production.
