Exercise Focus: Pilates

What is Pilates?

Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, Pilates is a physical fitness routine that focuses on the mind controlling the muscles. Joseph Pilates believed the mind and body were connected and developed a system he believed would strengthen both. The routine is designed to improve flexibility, endurance, and strengthen the core. Pilates is adaptable to any physical level through modifications of the exercise movements. The modifications help prevent injury for those on different physical levels. Pilates is a popular method of exercise with many claiming they feel stronger, leaner and more graceful in their movements.

Strengthen the Core

We have all heard how important it is to strengthen your core. The core includes the deep muscles in your abdomen and back. Strengthening these muscles will protect your back and possible relieve back pain. Strong abs will help your posture and overall strength. Strengthening the core is heart of the Pilates method.

Principles of Pilates

Pilates is based on six main principles: Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath, and Flow.

Centering: Pilates focus on the center or the core of your body.

Concentration: Each step of a Pilates exercise must have full attention and given full effort.

Control: Maintain full control of each muscle during the exercises.

Precision: Each body part has an appropriate placement and alignment for each exercise. You must maintain the proper alignment and focus.

Breath: Using your breath properly is an important part of Pilates. The movements coordinate with breathing. Use full breaths while doing the exercise.

Flow: All body parts are connected for graceful movements of each exercise.

Pilates Equipment

You will perform Pilates exercises either on a mat or the floor. The most common piece of equipment is the reformer. The reformer is made of wood or metal and has pulleys for you to develop core strength. It is a large piece of equipment where you lay down and insert your feet into stirrups to perform the exercises. You will find reformers at Pilates studios. For home use you will want to simply use exercise bands for the same types of exercises.
