Exercising With Your Cat

tabby catIf any cats live in your house, I am sure you are aware of how they watch everything you do and don’t miss a trick, even if it looks like they are not interested. When I do my exercises, one of my cats (Nero by name) simply has to join in the not so much fun. He walks between my legs while I attempt those “scissors” exercises and nudges me with his head when I am trying to lift weights, often moving just in time to avoid colliding with them on their downward spiral to the floor.

This togetherness is cute, but not result-oriented. He is so adorable that I have no choice but to smile at him and meet his amber gaze as he tries to help me along with my regimen (which I don’t want to do in the first place.) Why he suddenly wants to be with me when he could go all day with barely giving me a glance is beyond my comprehension. Although he is a very loving and affectionate cat, he only seems to want my attention when it is impossible for me to give it to him. I suppose this is the way of cats, but how does one do what one needs to do?

I have tried distracting him with catnip, the television and cat videos of birds cavorting in parks, but when I am exercising, Nero cares about nothing else and only has eyes for me (like that old song). Sometimes he gets bored even with exercising and when that happens, he will simply lie across my chest and yawn as I try to lift weights. As can be imagined, this is little help for one who hates lifting weights to begin with.

The bottom line is this. After a few weeks of exercising on a regular basis, I haven’t lost an ounce, but Nero who was at the vet last week for vaccinations, weighed in at two pounds less than usual!

Go figure!
