Book: Explore Night Science!

By: Cindy Blobaum

Published by: Nomad Press

Homeschool Method: Unit Study, Any

Age Recommendation: 6 to 9

Synopsis:

Whether living in the country or in the city, kids will be amazed to learn about what happens in the natural world just outside their door after the sun goes down with this guide to the nighttime changes in the plant kingdom, the animal kingdom, and the sky, as well as changes that happen in their own bodies at night. By working through step-by-step instructions, the age-appropriate, hands-on activities engage children as young scientists in the investigative process. Activities such as making an indoor night garden, attracting night insects, imitating night sounds, working with night vision, and building a stardust trap bring learning to life and enrich the text.

My thoughts:

Now that them days are getting shorter it is a perfect time to study the night. With Explore Night Science, your child can learn everything about the night vision, night creatures, and shadows. Each lesson is explained in detail and contains a hands on lesson that kids will love to do. The book can be used as a supplement to another curriculum or by itself as a unit study. The activities can be used by one child, all your children as a group study or for a homeschool co-op activity. The age recommendation is on target so for older kids you may have to supplement some information and activities. Our personal favorite was building the personal star dome out of an umbrella. Doesn’t that sound fun? It was so much fun the girls continue to use it. They have learned so much from this one activity. Every lesson was a new adventure and brought so much curiosity about the night. Excellent resource for night science for early elementary students.
