Family Book Club

You have no doubt heard of book clubs. Even Oprah has a book club, or at least she did for a while, back when I used to watch her occasionally. A book club is a group of people that select a book, which all the members will read, and the group will then get together to comment on it. Members may praise, rate, or critique the book or give their opinions regarding literal or metaphoric passages.

Well, a family book club is going to be a bit more simplistic, by necessity. Young children aren’t going to wax philosophical over feats of literary genius. However, you might be surprised by how intuitive youngsters can be and how much they can glean from reading.
Starting a family book club may also be a good way to help your children succeed in Accelerated Reading or other reading programs at school. My children often enjoy detailing their latest reads for me, and I sometimes read the titles they are especially fond of. While this can be a bit more difficult when children are in very different age ranges, you can adapt the book club structure to fit your family.

For example, instead of everyone reading the book separately, you might sit down each evening, every other evening, or once a week to read together. Each family member can take turns reading a few passages and then everyone can comment on the portions read.

Developing a love for reading, and making it fun and interactive, will give your kids a great start in their education. Well-rounded children tend to advance in school, as do those whom are well read. These are not the only benefits either. Reading as a family is also a great way to spend some quality time engaging in a relaxed activity together.
