Family Health and Fitness Day Is Coming!

Mark your calendar: Family Health and Fitness Day is coming Saturday, September 29th! Now in its eleventh year, Family Health and Fitness day is a chance for you and your family to be active together.

Need some ideas for fun family activities? Here are a few things you and your family can do to celebrate Family Health and Fitness Day.

  1. Rent Dance Dance Revolution or another dancing game for your video game system. Challenge your feet and your brain by following the arrows to perform dances of varying complexity. You’ll definitely laugh at your missteps, and bur some serious calories doing it! Many game systems have dance pads available — just be sure to anchor your dance pad before you start hopping around. Use a rug pad with grip to keep your dance pad in place.
  2. Practice your family balancing act. Grab a pair of stilts or a unicycle and try to master your movement. It’s fun! Practice the stilts on the grass, just in case you lose your balance, and have adults spot the kids on the unicycle. Helmets might be a good idea for the unicycle riders, too.
  3. Take an old fashioned scavenger hunt a step further. Try geocaching or letterboxing. Find your way to the cache using maps, clues, and GPS (global positioning systems).
  4. Make your family workout a fundraising effort. Sign up for a local race, ride, or walk to benefit your favorite charity. You can raise money for a cause and get out and get healthy!
  5. Have everybody in the family pick a sport or activity and spend one weekend day trying it out. You may end up finding a ton of new fun family fitness activities that you all will love!
  6. Pick a vacation destination and try to rack up walking, running, or cycling miles equivalent to the driving distance. Everybody in the family can contribute their miles to the effort — when you reach your goal, you’ll be ready for your vacation!
