Family Home Evening: A House of Order

This month’s family home evening lesson is focused on creating a positive home environment. This lesson can branch out in many different areas, and you should be able to adjust it to meet your own family’s needs. You can talk about keeping the home clean and participating in chores as well as having a positive attitude towards people in the family.

Open the lesson with a song and a prayer. You can begin by sharing Doctrine and Covenants 88:119. Then ask your family what things this scripture says that we need to do to bring the spirit into your home. On a poster board or a dry erase board list each of the categories. You can have the family break up into groups or brainstorm together ways that the family can work on these goals. The topics should be prayer, fasting, faith, learning, glory, order and God.

You may want to combine categories that fit together such as prayer, fasting, faith and god. Under these things you can talk about the importance of family home evening, scripture study and family prayer. You can also talk about individual study and working on strengthening your testimony. You may want to form a plan on how you will implement these things within your family.

The house of order can cover chores, the music that is played in the house and the way that family members treat each other. You could discuss and create a chore chart, and talk about helping each other with the chores. You can also talk about the importance of treating each other kindly and supporting each other.

Learning can cover both spiritual and temporal knowledge. You may encourage your children to set specific learning goals, as well as family goals. You can also set up a homework area or a specific homework time for each member of the family.

Once you have done this you can play a game or do some other type of activity and have refreshments. Families Can Be Together Forever and When We’re Helping are both good songs for this lesson. Be sure to end with a prayer.
