Famous Oprah Moments – Part 4

It seems that the memorable Oprah moments just never end! Here are a few more:

Oprah’s Tearful Moment

Oh sure, Oprah has shed more than one tear over the years, but when she hosted author Truddi Chase, she really broke down. Chase wrote “When Rabbit Howls,” a memoir of her tragic childhood in which she was raped by her stepfather. Oprah broke into tears when introducing Chase and asked the cameraman to stop filming her. Oprah too was a victim of sexual abuse, having been raped at the age of nine and giving birth to a son who died in infancy when she was 14.

Oprah vs. Beef

Oprah really showed her muscle when she proclaimed on her April 16, 1996 show that mad cow disease had stopped her from eating burgers. Beef sales plummeted – so much so that a group of Texan cattle ranchers sued her. However, they lost – did they really think they could take on Oprah? Fortunately, for them, beef sales recovered.

Oprah Invites Terry McMillan to Confront Her Ex

Wow, talk about uncomfortable moments! Terry McMillan is a famed author who had written many books, including “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.” That book was turned into a movie starring Angela Bassett and the oh-my-gosh-he’s-so-handsome Taye Diggs. The plot involved the successful 40-something Stella who had everything but love in her life. She found it while on a Jamaican vacation in the form of extra hot, much younger Winston (played by Diggs).

The character of Winston was based on McMillan’s real life husband, Jonathan Plummer. Like the character in the movie, Plummer was Jamaican and was more than 20 years younger than McMillan was when she met him. The two began a steamy affair – at least until McMillan left the island. However, she couldn’t get Plummer out of her mind and he came to live with her before the two eventually married.

As usual, there was only one problem – after six years of marriage, Stella lost her groove when Plummer announced that he was gay. McMillan heatedly confronted Plummer on Oprah, asking him if he really ever loved her and if he had always been gay. The two finally admitted that the love they felt during their marriage was real and after the divorce and spending some quality time together, they have both found closure.
