Fashion Statements

Perhaps you are too tired to talk. Or, maybe you are simply too shy to verbalize your opinions. Then you may be the perfect candidate for the talking tee. T-shirts that talk—well, not literally, but the messages emblazoned on them can give voice to your inner most thoughts. I agree some of them feature some crude and inappropriate statements (especially for tweens and teens to be wearing). But don’t despair, not all lettered t-shirts have to be censored prior to wearing them.

Takepride tees showcase great graphics and a “hipster sensibility” for both sexes. These tees actually have positive messages seared onto their fabrics—ones that honor the men and women who are risking their lives in battle to secure our freedoms. Now, hold on, these shirts aren’t venues to declare war pride; rather they are simply cute tees (I like the coral pink one) that have logos inspired by an army medic’s dual duties of combat and curing. They retail for around $20, but the best part is 20% of Takepride’s profits go to charities and causes that assist combat veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.

If you’re looking for a smaller way to show your appreciation, consider picking up some of those camouflage wristbands that are available at local retail shops. I found some for under $2. You can choose among these military-minded words: courage, honor, strength, bravery, victory and pride.

This next item may not aid those overseas, but it will help kids in your own backyard. Benefit Cosmetics has teamed up with the group Big Brothers Big Sisters (which provides mentors for young children) with their lip gloss Big Magic. All (that’s right, 100%) of the proceeds go to the charity. The partnership, which has been going on for a while has been so successful that the company has recently come out with Big Magic 2, a light pearly pink gloss. To mark the one-year anniversary of the project, Benefit is celebrating with a nationwide event at all their make up counters. It’s a fashionable way to support a good cause
