Wikipedia defines “fashionista” as someone who is an “avid follower of fashion.” Perhaps, then you could consider actress Pam Anderson the “anti-fashionista.” It’s not so much that she doesn’t follow fashion, she just… well, she’s just not credited with being very fashionable.
The guru of fashion Mr. Blackwell once called Anderson “the worst dressed star trying to stay on television.” Known for sashaying around L.A. in her Daisy dukes and barely-there shirts that accentuated her famous chest, Anderson had another trademark clothing item—those infamous UGGs. The former “Baywatch” star is actually credited with popularizing the sheepskin boots. In fact, in some circles Anderson was considered the cover girl for the Australian made boots.
But, now, after more than a decade practically living in the comfy stomps, Anderson is boycotting the boots. GASP! What could have turned the buxom blonde against her legendary accessories? The animal lover finally figured out that the boots are made from real sheepskin.
AHA!!
“I’m getting rid of our Uggs,” Anderson posted on her personal website. “I feel so guilty for that craze being started around Baywatch days – I used to wear them with my red swimsuit to keep warm – never realizing that they were SKIN!”
Apparently, Anderson thought the boots’ soft, wool-like lining was attached to a synthetic backing. But, in fact, the boots are made from sheepskin with the fur intact. (Did I mention that she’s been wearing the boots for more than a decade?)
“I thought they were shaved kindly,” she posts.
For those of you who don’t know, Anderson is a longtime animal-rights activist, and celebrity spokesperson for People for the Ethical treatment of Animals or PETA. Now, she’s trying to persuade her fans to ban UGGs from their closets and start a new trend.
“Do NOT buy UGGs! Buy Stella McCartney or Juicy boots – I’m looking for alternatives myself for my boys and the men in my life! I’m designing some right now for my family and will try and have some available on my Web site soon,” Anderson writes.
When reached for a comment by a leading news source, an UGG spokesman had this to say: “Sheepskin is a natural byproduct of the food industry. There is no animal abuse in our production.”
My message to Anderson: Before you throw a huge UGG bonfire, consider donating your furry friends to people who struggle to make enough money to eat animals, let alone wear them on their feet.
