Father’s Day Gift Idea: CD Holder

Make Dad a CD holder that he can use in the car, keep in his briefcase, or put in his luggage if he travels. It’s a thoughtful, useful gift that’s even more special because you made it yourself.

Start with a piece of thick cardboard (cut a piece from an unneeded box). The cardboard should measure about six inches wide by twelve inches long. Cover the entire piece of cardboard with soft fabric that won’t scratch CDs. Use craft glue or fabric glue (no staples that could end up scratching CDs). Make the smoothest side the front.

Next, cut pockets from the fabric. The pockets should be 6 ¼ inches wide by 5 ¼ inches tall. Fold over the edges and press them with fusible seam tape. The seams should be 1/2″ wide.

Use washable fabric glue to attach each pocket to the main piece. The top of the first pocket should be about 3 inches down from the top of the cardboard. Attach the pockets one at a time, allowing each one to dry a bit before proceeding to the next one. They should overlap, allowing about 1-2 inches of the previous pocket to show (you can allow more space between them if you’re only making a few pockets).

If you want to decorate, it’s best to decorate on the edges or on the outside of the bottom pocket. Glitter or even hardened pieces of paint may scratch CDs if used on interior pockets.

Mom can help sew extra large paper clips to the back if you want Dad to be able to hang the CD holder from the visor.

To make a CD holder for the desk, to hold computer discs, make a shorter one with fewer pockets and attach a picture frame easel to the back, or pick up a wood or acrylic display easel.

*Teens will also like this project, and may want to make CD holders for their rooms as well.
