As promised, I am going to list some family devotion books that I recommend. Most of these my family has used. The ones that we haven’t used have been given high marks by some of my friends.
First of all, more than any devotion, I recommend reading the Bible with your children. Help them hide God’s word in their heart while they are young. I have recommended these books before. This time I am attaching links.
My family loves Egermeier’s Bible Story Book. It is accurate and the stories are in chronological order. The stories are well told. They are easy for young children to understand and interesting enough to hold the attention of older children. The illustrations are lovely as well.
Bible Stories to Read by Martha Rohrer is great for preschool children. The stories are short and easy to follow. There is also a coloring book that goes with the book called Bible Stories to Color.
To give a broader understanding about the Bible is a book my husband always has at his side when doing Bible study with the kids. It’s called Reproducible Maps, Charts, Time Lines and Illustrations: What the Bible Is All About Resources. This book includes maps. Charts and graphs, time lines, and even a Bible reading plan. My children enjoy looking at the pictures and seeing where the places they are reading about are located on the map. It truly is a wonderful resource for studying the bible.
Now, for some devotional/teaching books:
This is one that we have not used yet, but I have friends who use it and love it. It’s called Leading Little Ones to God: A Child’s Book of Bible Teachings by Marian M. Schoolland.. This book is divided into fourteen sections. Each section covers different topics, such as looking for God, Sin spoiled the world, what Jesus did and how God’s children live and grow. Each devotion includes a Bible story, something to talk about, a scripture to read and a hymn to sing. It seems that going through this book would lay a very solid Christian foundation for children.
The next book I recommend is called A Child’s Book of Character Building: Growing Up in God’s World-At Home, at School, at Play. I love this book! Each week it covers a different character trait, such as hospitality or being a hard worker. It gives three examples of this trait being lived out. One Biblical example, a school example and a home example. There are discussion questions and a page to color with each example. At the beginning of each section there is a simple definition that kids can memorize. I am preparing to go through this with my son. I learned a lot the first time through and hope to learn more this time around.
