Book Summary:
The Berenstain Bears are getting ready for Christmas. As they open the box that should hold the nativity scene they find everything is missing except the baby Jesus in the manger. Immediately, upon this discovery, Brother, Sister and Honey Bear set out to find the rest of the pieces of the nativity to complete the scene. The three search through the entire house taking your little one along. Your child gets to lift the flaps to find each piece of the nativity scene. Finally all the pieces are found and the nativity is put up on display.
What I Thought:
My little one cannot resist a “lift the flap” book. That alone gave it three stars in my preschooler’s mind. What I loved was the simplicity of the well written story. The storyline is interesting enough to keep your child engaged yet simple enough that you can stop and explain each nativity piece to your child. This book can start entire conversations about the birth of Christ. I loved how the book reinforced the birth of Jesus and did not shy away from using His precious name. The last lines of the book are: “Now the Bear family sets up their manager scene. ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace!’ says the whole Bear family.” If you are seeking a Christmas book to begin a new tradition then you have found it. If you have a nativity scene try reading this book and showing each piece of your scene to your child as you read. If you want to have a bit of fun hide pieces of your nativity scene and allow your children to find them. I know this book will be a part of my family’s Christmas for years to come. I have always been a fan of the Berenstain Bears. The books are one of the few left for preschoolers which emphasize character and God honoring concepts.
