Finding A Babysitter

Getting a babysitter for the evening when you are a single mom is almost like getting a little vacation. It’s wonderful if you have family that can care for your child, but sometimes you have to get a babysitter, and that can be scary.

Most teenage girls baby-sit at one time or another and the majority of them are really good with the kids. They are close enough in age to remember what is was like to be smaller.

When you are looking for a teenage sitter, word of mouth is the best way to find a really good one. Every parent with a teenage daughter will tell you her daughter baby-sits. You need to talk to people who have a teenage babysitter.

Ask your friends with children who they use, and if they are comfortable leaving their children with her. Ask for her number and call to set up a time you and your child can meet with her. You want to make sure your child is comfortable with her before you leave them alone together.

Many teenagers take Red Cross babysitting courses. This is always nice as they are taught basic safety and what to do in an emergency.

Once you find your sitter go over a list of house rules. Don’t just assume that she knows what you want her to do.

Specify how much TV, computer and video game time the kids can have. Make sure she knows what snacks they can have and when they should go to bed.

Talk to her about her computer and phone use while she is at your home. Also let her know if you expect her to clean up after the kids.

If you take the time to spell everything out you will have fewer problems. The babysitter will also feel more confident if she knows the house rules and the kids will be less able to manipulate her.

Most of all, make sure there is an emergency number list and that if you cannot be reached someone else nearby is aware that you will be out and the sitter may be calling them.

Now go out, try to have fun, nights away are rare.
