Finding Your Support System

I can only imagine going through a divorce without a sound support system by my side. I was fortunate enough to have two parents who had gone through a divorce and could empathize with what I was going through. They understood the pain I was feeling, even though the divorce was inevitable.

They stood by my side when I was completely falling apart. They helped me pack up my little apartment and move in to their basement. They helped me while I was getting back on my feet and going back to school. They supported me through thick and thin and I honestly could not have made it this far without them.

I also had incredible support from the people at my church. They brought in meals and stopped by almost constantly just to see how I was doing and to ask if they could do anything for me. They were so willing to do whatever they could to serve me and my son during this difficult time and it meant the world to me.

I had a dear aunt who watched my son for me my first semester back at school. She also gave me her son’s hand-me-downs when I could no longer afford clothes for mine. Having her love and support helped me in ways that she will never know.

Since that time, the road has been far from easy. The challenges of being divorced don’t end when the papers are signed. I learned just how important it was to nourish those relationships with my family and friends. They have stood by my side through thick and thin and have helped to keep things in perspective for me. At times when I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed by all the negativity around me, they were able to show me the silver lining. If you are going through a divorce, keep a strong support system around to buoy you up. You’d be amazed at the difference they can make in your life.
