Fitness Journal – Pushing the Envelope

Today’s workout was more necessary than I thought it would be. It began with my morning stretch and treadmill stroll for 30 minutes at 2.8. I had to get out of the house early and I had to get a series of errands done. I did my bare minimum workout in an effort to make sure that it was done before I headed out to go shopping and more. By the time I was done and back home with my daughter it was after 3 in the afternoon. I put her down for a nap and then went to check my email.

My computer wouldn’t boot up.

Not only wouldn’t the computer boot up, it was behaving as though the hard drive wasn’t even there. Concerned, I did what I know to do and then finally, shut it all down to wait for my husband. Several hours later, our daughter out with the rest of the family to watch a fireworks display in a nearby town, I was back on the treadmill pushing myself to the limits.

My heart rate was cranked up to 150 and I went five miles in a little over an hour and a half. I finally took a break from it and went for a walk or three around the block to cool off. Why was I working out so hard tonight? Because my computer, my hard drive – it was dead Jim – and we’re not sure we’re going to be able to retrieve all the data on it.

That’s five years worth of work and at least three books among numerous other files that are now out of my reach. At the moment, I am trying to restore what I can from the sketchy backups I have, but my back up drive went kaput more than a year ago. The walking was an effort to push beyond my limits and to cope with the stress of the situation.

My cool down walk lasted 45 minutes and was specifically designed to help me avoid painful leg cramps from overdoing it. I’ll be sore tomorrow. I’ll be frustrated tomorrow. But I’ll likely work out again and keep my eye on the target of achieving my 15 minute mile for the Race for the Cure walk in October.
