Five Tips for Successful Visiting Teaching

You may have made a New Year’s Resolution to be one hundred percent for visiting teaching this year. This is a great goal, and it is important that you plan well in order to achieve it. Here are five things you can do to help make your visiting teaching successful this year.

1) Take the time to get to know the sisters you visit. It would be great if you could be friends with all the sisters you visit. Go out of your way to say hello to them at church. You can call to chat during the month, just to see how they are. This builds a great spirit of friendship and unity in Relief Society.

2) Learn what type of visit work best for the sister you visit. Some sisters need to talk longer than other sisters do, while others enjoy shorter visits. If you can figure out what type of sister you have, your visits will be more successful.

3) Prepare the message each month. It is also important to adjust your message as you are visiting. I know that even though I prepared the same message for all three sisters, one month each sister had a different emphasis. The change was as a result of the conversation we had had earlier in the visit.

4) Be available to help your sisters as much as possible. In reality you may not be able to help all of the time, but you should try to help out when you can during times of crisis. Sometimes people just need to know that you are available to talk to or to baby-sit during the day.

5) Pray for your sisters on a regular basis. It is amazing how your heart softens when you are praying for someone else. This can also be a great benefit to the sisters that you visit.
