Flag Day Fun for the Whole Family

Did you know Flag Day is just three days away? Time to get out the red, white and blue and proudly display Old Glory—-the honored symbol of the United States of America.

While Flag Day may not be celebrated with the same pomp and circumstance as shown on the Fourth of July, it is a day when all Americans honor the flag by showing respect for its designers and all that it stands for. Betsy Ross created the first American flag back in the 1700s. On Saturday, June 14, 1777, Congress authorized the original U.S. flag. It had 13 stripes (7 red and 6 white), which represented the original 13 colonies, and 13 white stars in a blue field, which depicted a new constellation.

Today, our country’s flag is adorned with a blue constellation and the same red and white stripes, but now 50 stars have been added to represent each state in the nation.

In honor of Flag Day, consider accenting your home with patriotic touches. The following Flag Day crafts are simple to make, and can be saved to display on the Fourth of July:

STRING OF STARS

Materials:

Construction paper (red, white and blue)

Scissors

Yarn (red, white or blue)

A stapler

Embellishments: Crayons, markers, glitter, sequins, glitter glue, etc.

Directions:

Draw a large star on a piece of paper.

Cut out the star and decorate it with embellishments.

Fold over one tip of the star.

Staple the star to a length of yarn.

Repeat steps, making as many stars as you wish to fill the length of yarn.

When you are done, hang the string of stars for all to see.

PATRIOTIC POTS

Materials:

Terracotta plant pots

Red, white and blue acrylic paint

Paintbrushes

Directions:

Paint the rim of the flowerpot white and the lower part of the pot blue. Let the paint dry thoroughly.

Add a second coat of paint. Allow to dry.

Paint white stars on the blue portion. Paint red stripes on the white part. Allow to dry.

Add red, white or blue flowers to the pot and display indoors or out.
